It can’t be that hard can it? Why should I hire someone to help me and guide me through a Medicaid application? How hard can it be?
Those are fair questions. But the truth is that applying for Medicaid can be grueling and, most importantly, it is NOT a science. What do I mean by that? Well the complexities of Medicaid are great and the person reviewing your application may not fully know or understand the rules. There are many rules and many new caseworkers reviewing these applications. We have seen cases where the applicant was denied for a wide variety of reasons that were not the law.
A recent case was denied because the applicant made $3,000 a month in income. That was considered too much by the caseworker and the application was denied. In Pennsylvania there is an income limit only for LIFE or Aging waiver programs. These are both Medicaid payment for home care programs. Yet, a caseworker may believe (as many people do) that we have an income limit. That is not the case in Pennsylvania for nursing home care.
